I paint mainly in watercolour because I love the transparency of the medium. Perhaps because I was born and grew up on a farm close to the sea in South Devon, I am drawn to the play of light on water and in water, and the complex textures and intricate, often abstract, patterns to be discovered in old, well-used, ordinary items: a battered barn door, the depth of colour in the patina on a rusty mooring ring, the pattern formed by old mooring ropes left on the beach at low tide, a tangle of chains, footprints in the sand.
Well-meaning friends have told me that the subject matter of my paintings is a little odd! I suppose all artists look for a different perspective on the world and mine seems to draw me to the often over-looked everyday things that nevertheless have a beauty of their own and a story to tell because they have been loved and used for many years. So I paint sandscapes and rusty chains and tatty ropes and seaweed and rocks and pebbles and peeling paint and weathered wood and barnacle-encrusted props and battered buoys.
Fascinated by the intricate beauty of plants, I also enjoy painting botanical subjects--the perfection of an orchid, the abstract quality of the endless skins of a red onion ... Always something a little different, so if that is what you are looking for, find my work at the Mason-Laurence Gallery at Dartington, Totnes; the Loft Gallery, Salcombe (Easter to the end of September); the Leading Edge Gallery, Ivybridge; and from Oct. 14-29, 2017 at Middle Soar, Malborough, during the South Hams Arts Forum annual Arts Trail.
